Revolutionary War Monument by Charles Bulfinch |
Beacon Hill Memorial Column
Outside Beacon Hill State House / Rear Charles Bulfinch, Sculptor Bronze / Granite
Clearly another first for Boston. This monument
was the first in the country to honor our Revolutionary war
heroes.
Created by Charles Bulfinch, architect of the
State House, the Beacon Hill Memorial Column was
originally erected in 1790, but removed in 1811. The
memorial was recreated in 1990 and contains inscription
plaques from the original monument.
The Beacon Monument dedicated to the fallen
of The American Revolution was blown down 1789, the
same year Charles Bulfinch, who graduated Harvard
1781, was chosen one of the selectmen of the town of
Boston who redesigned the Beacon Hill Column.
